So I was driving my jobs 330xi manual and came to a red light. I put the car into neutral, foot off the clutch and just chilled. When the light turned green I had no issue getting going then when I went to shift from 1st to 2nd all I heard was a loud “CLUNK” combined with the car shuttering. The car didn’t repeat the noise from 2nd to 3rd or 3rd to 4th. At another stop sign the “CLUNK” happened again from 1st to 2nd.

Am I just utterly fucking up my shifts or is this car a mechanics dream?

The non-M E90 cars have a clutch delay valve that’s supposed to make up for crappy driving but usually just makes the 1-2 shift clunky. The M3 has a “valve” that’s actually just an empty housing to make sure the hydraulic hose fits in the same place without being stretched. You can remove a part from the non-M one to make it stop the delay, get a modified one, or an M3 one. I have a modified one and it smoothed out the shifts a lot.

I’ve never seen that color on the E90.

I’d agree with some of the above...guibo, CSB, possibly driveshaft U-joint, etc.

It goes into gear smoothly, correct? That 1->2 shift has the potential for a lot of change in forces. Have you experimented with on/off throttle at speed? For example, accelerate hard in 2nd or 3rd and quickly release the throttle to coast, staying in gear. See if you can replicate the clunk in other situations. Of course, getting the car up in the air for a visible inspection will be very helpful.

If it is the guibo or CSB, it is a relatively easy and cheap fix for the DIYer.

It goes into gear smoothly with no resistance.

I don’t have the time to really dig into the car sadly, but I wish I could. I’m just trying to find out so I can inform my boss so it can be resolved

Then it sounds like somewhere along the driveline a part designed to absorb energy transfers has failed. Is there any vibration transmitted to the cabin?

Other possibilities that come to mind are motor/trans mounts....maybe diff mounts. Shouldn’t (hopefully) be too costly of a repair. Keep us posted!

The car didnt shutter or shake, but that CLUNK could be heard with the windows up and through the conversation I was having with my co worker

I think that the horrid amber signals are what makes it look worse. I do like burgundy.
